Discovering the Best Nursing Home Care
Posted By: Farid fm
Our loved ones are important to us and that is why placing someone we love in a nursing home is such a hard choice for anyone to make. In addition to feeling like we cannot care for those who have cared for us, we must also deal with not ever having had to take on this task before. There are some many questions you may have about nursing homes that you may not know where to begin.
There is much to think about when considering nursing home facilities for yourself or for your loved one. Having to take so many things, like staff, quality of care and environment, can be overwhelming; you should start by choosing which type of facility will best meet your needs. There are nursing home chains, nonprofit and private nursing homes. Choosing a type of facility will help you to narrow your research field. From there you can use many of the tools available to you online or elsewhere to further your effort and to help you rest assured that you have made the best choice.
When beginning your search you should also consider and special needs you or your loved one may have and find the facilities that are best equipped to handle those needs. Does your loved one need skilled care which allows them access to Medicaid which is accepted by most nursing home chains? Or would you prefer a private-pay or nonprofit facility? Figuring out the answer to this question can help you narrow the field of possibilities.
Once you've figured out which type of facility you prefer you can begin contacting these types of nursing homes near you. Before scheduling visits, you should narrow your search even further by conducting phone interviews. When calling get the answers to important questions like: "What's your staff turnover rate?", “Do you offer skilled care?", and “How much can I expect to spend with your facility”? Asking these questions will help you to figure out which facilities you would like to tour.
While touring a facility it is important to remember that cleanliness is more important than newness. Although a nursing home may be brand new or may have recently been renovated, the cost the entity has incurred is normally passed on to you. A long standing facility that is clean is more likely the best choice.
Long standing homes are also more likely to have staff that have been with the facility for many years. A nursing care home with staff members that have worked there for a long time points to job satisfaction; satisfied employees usually enjoy working with the residents and are likely to administer higher quality care. Perhaps the most important thing to us when we look into an assisted living facility is making sure that our loved one is well taken care of.
The best way to be sure that your loved one is being treated properly is to familiarize yourself with the rights that residents have within these facilities. All nursing homes are federally required to adhere to the Resident's Bill of Rights. This bill includes but is not limited to the right to: information about one's medical condition, choose one's own physician, manage one's own personal finances, privacy, dignity and respect, be free from abuse and unnecessary restraint, voice grievance without retaliation, no unfounded discharge or transfer, be allowed visitors and to control visits, and legal counsel. All nursing homes in the United States are required to make the Resident's Bill of Right available at all times to residents and their families. For a complete list of these rights you should be sure to ask for a copy at any of the nursing care homes you visit.
Making the decision to place yourself or a loved on into a nursing home does not have to be a bad experience. There are many options available and with a little bit of research it is easy to become educated enough to make the best choice possible. Nursing home life can be fulfilling, so long as we or our loved ones are properly cared for. Be sure to check into your options thoroughly, doing this will to ensure that you have chosen a clean facility with a low staff turnover rate; a facility that regularly schedules activities for the residents outside of the campus, and which adheres to the Resident's Bill of Rights, easy.

Best Nursing Home in Your Area
Placing a loved one in a nursing home is not an easy decision. In the best case scenario we would be able to take care of them ourselves at home. Although it is not the ideal solution and may be mentally troublesome, the process of finding the best facility for you loved one does not have to be a difficult one.
In addition to considering all of the negative news coverage, one must also take into account several other factors, such as nursing home staff, quality, environment, and life. There are so many options from which to choose that, at first, making an informed decision may seem impossible. Just knowing whether to choose a nonprofit nursing home, private nursing homes or a chain can be a daunting task. Fortunately, there are tools available to us that can help us ensure that we are making the best choice.

Depression in Men: 14 Symptoms and What To Do About it.
How is it possible in the country leading the world in medical science, one in four men have a disabling illness that torments them and their families and most never receive treatment for it. That illness is Depression. Depression in men is often “covert depression” and it is a widespread problem in the United States. Depression in men often goes unrecognized--by themselves, colleagues, family and even physicians.
Depression in Men
As a men enter midlife, stressful factors can come into play, leading to a greater risk for developing depression. Depression in men gets at our very core sense of what it is to be a man, and has to be understood that way. Depression is a real illness; it is treatable, and men do get it. So how do you recognize depression in men?
14 Symptoms of Depression in Men
Many of the symptoms of depression in men are the same as you might find in women. Those symptoms are (most of these should be experienced for at least 2 weeks to be considered a symptom):
• A persistent sad mood every day or nearly every day
• Anger, mood swings and irritability
• Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed
• Significant change in appetite or body weight
• Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping nearly every day
• Fatigue and loss of energy
• Physical slowing or agitation
• Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, shame and self doubt
• Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
• Change in interest regarding sex
• Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
In general, a person who is diagnosed with depression will have five or more of the symptoms listed above. Depression in men however will show the following 3 symptoms that many women will not:
• Lack of ability to perform sexually as opposed to just lack of interest
• Hiding of feelings
• Outward aggression, irritability or hostility towards others
It is estimated that 40% of men will suffer some degree of depression between the ages of 40 and 60.
What Are the Treatment Options
Treatment choice depends on a number of variables, the patient’s diagnosis, severity of symptoms, and preference. Treatment for depression in men may include antidepressant medications, psychotherapy or both. If you put off treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or even years. Other helpful resources for treatment and recognition of depression include family members, friends, and employee assistance professionals in the workplace.
The fact is, depression in men may always have been far more common than we once thought because depression in men shows itself differently. Now that depression in men is out in the open more research and testing is being devoted to the subject.
Finally, even despite the differences in how depression shows up in men many treatments and techniques work equally well on both women and men. And luckily there are great resources available online and at your local bookstore to help you when deciding which treatment is best for your situation.

Peyronie's Disease: What is the Best Treatment?
Peyronie's Disease: What is the Best Treatment?
Every day, almost without fail, a man who just learned he has Peyronie's disease will ask in an email a question that goes something like this: "My medical specialist and my family doctor both say they can't help me because there isn't any approved drug treatment for PD. They want me wait a year or two to see if I get bad enough that I eventually need surgery. That sounds crazy to me! Shouldn't there be some kind of natural way to treat Peyronie's disease?"
A common question, and a good one.
Men with PD are very surprised to learn from their doctor that there is no medical treatment for Peyronie's disease, other than the surgery. Because of this they are perfectly willing and grateful to try Alternative Medicine treatment since there is almost no known risk involved. The medical profession has no treatment to offer men with PD, so it seems logical that this other option should be explored
Based on my own personal experience and clinical expereince with hundreds of men who had PD, I understand there is no one magic therapy you can use. The best approach is to use multiple therapies at once to get the job done. Based on years of expereince, the Peyronie's Disease Institute has developed a wide list of safe and effective Alternative Medicine therapies that deliver the best chance for success against PD . While each one might not be consistently effective against PD, time and time again it has been demonstrated that by using a combination of several of these therapies at once, a great increase of therapeutic effectiveness occurs. In short, when using Alternative Medicine, the best way to treat Peyroie's diseae is to use everything you can throw against it.
There is no one therapy that is a magic bullet. There are no wonder cures for Peyronie's disease. The men who receive the best treatment recovery with their PD are the stubborn ones who continue using day after day with as much therapy as possible, until they overwhelm the fibrous tissue that makes up the PD scar so it is eventually reabsorbed by the body. With persistence over time they slowly improve, as the scar(s) becoming softer and smaller. Slowly they notice the abnormal curvature and pain improve. Some get fantastic results and some get only moderate results - few who work hard at it do poorly. There usually is progress to be made if you work at it.
To learn much more about the Alternative Medicine treatment of PD, go to the link for the Peyronie's Disease Institute website, found at the end of this article. This helpful website presents a huge amount of information in easy to understand language.
So, one more time, "What is the best way to treat PD?" The answer is simple: Do all that you can to help yourself, using several Alternative Medicine therapies, for as long as is necessary, until your immune system overwhelms the scar and this terrible problem benefits from the natural healing process. To do less than that is to allow the scar to ruin your life in many different ways.

Peyronie's Disease: Not So Uncommon
Peyronie's Disease: Not So Uncommon
Peyronie's disease (PD) is thought to be a rare connective tissue disorder of the penis that has no known cause or cure; even the celluar mechanism of how PD starts is not completely understood. Three primary diagnostic criteria of PD are necessary to establish a diagnosis of Peyronie’s disease, even though there is no universal agreement even on the following: 1) existence of a nodule or band of variable size made of fibrous scar tissue ) called a scar or plaque, chielfy found in a thin but tough tissue membrane known as the tunica albuginea, 2) variable pain that occurs during erection, and 3) penile curvature or bend that was not present before the onset of PD. Most men with PD retain the ability to develop and maintain an erection. Some men may have difficulty achieving vaginal penetration because of curvature, pain for the man with PD or his partner pain during insertion.
Since only those people who personally deal with PD know anything abot it, most lay people assume it is a rare health condition. However, that is not the case at all.
Recent review of Peyronie’s disease
As some reports suggest, if Peyronie’s disease occurs in only one adult male of 200 (0.50%) in the US, that figure can be extrapolated to show that 1.4 million men have PD. In spite of this, Peyronie's disease is held out as a “rare disease” by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), because other statistics they have developed suggests PD affects fewer than 200,000 men in the USA.
Several studies of Peyronie’s disease in the late 1980s reported the prevalence at 0.4% to 2.0% of the adult male US population.
Since there is a tendency for men to both exaggerate in some cases about matters related to sexuality, yet at the same time to be shy and withdrawn concerning certain matters of sexuality, data concerning the occurrence of PD has proven to be most variable and unreliable. Previous information about frequency of PD relied upon surveys and interviews that used self-reporting and unverified information; hence, the actual rate of occurrence was merely an approximation or guess, at best.
Recent study of this question employed larger stduy groups of men with known and suspected PD, and cross-samples of data to verify the accuracy of data collected:
· Schwarzer and his colleagues created a PD questionnaire and sent it to 8,000 men of the region of Cologne, Germany. The response rate of men to this questionnaire was more than 55%, quite high. The results showed the occurence of Peyronie’s disease in this normal male population (mean age, 57.4 years) was a higher than expected 3.2%. Of those men of the 30-39 year age group, 1.5% demonstrated localized tissue hardening suggestive of PD; men 40-49 years of age this rate increased to 3.0% and in men 50-59 years of age the rate incrased to 4.0%. This occurence of tissue density or hardening increased along with advancing age to 6.5% in men older than 70 years.
· Matkov and his other researchers revealed that 30 (7%) of the 453 Peyronie’s disease patients being studied were younger than 40 years of age. Important characteristics of this more youthful PD group included: (1) recalled a specifica traumatic event during intercourse in which "ramming" or "jamming" occurred that was felt to be the start of the PD problem; (2) moderate to great pain during erection as a major presenting complaint; (3) men in the younger age group tended to have a curvature 10-20 degrees greater on average than men in the older age group.
· The Department of Urology, Loyola University Medical Center, in Maywood, Illinois, did a study to determine the prevalence of Peyronie's disease in a group of men being screened for prostate cancer in the United States. In this Loyola study 534 men provided a medical history, received a physical examination performed by a urologist and completed a Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) questionnaire. A diagnosis of Peyronie's disease was formed if the presence of a palpable penile nodule could be made. Consequently, 48 men in this study were found to have a palpable nodular mass on physical examination, for Peyronie's diseae occurence of 8.9%. The mean age of men with Peyronie's disease was 68.2 years compared to a mean of 61.8 years in men without Peyronie's disease. The conclusion of this study was that the prevalence of Peyronie's disease was greater than in most previously reported series.
Conclusion
These and many other recent studies and reviews of medical literature indicate Peyronie’s disease is far more common among the general male population than previously thought, and increasingly common in the older population. The mean onset of PD is about 53 years of age. While it is still not widely known among the general population, it is actually not even well-known within the medical community. This “rare” disease is obviously more widespread and less rare than previous measures indicated.
6 Secrets to Mass Building Workouts
Attention all bodybuilders, I would like to share some mass building workouts secrets and tips on how to gain mass with you. They have been extremely convenient and "worth it" to me, so I thought they would help you too. Let’s start with your workouts:
1. Don't pick a weight you are able to lift for more than ten reps, or less than five reps. Lift within 75 percent to 95 percent of your one rep max.
2. When you lift for mass, make 70 percent (approximately) of your lifts powerful and explosive. Meanwhile, the other 30 percent should be alot slower and more controlled.
3. Not including warm-ups, your total work volume should not be less than 50 reps, but no bigger than 80 reps.
4. In order to control the devastating effects that "lactic acid" has on your strength, you should make sure you are always alternating opposing muscle group exercises.
5. On your last warm-up set, there should be 5 percent more weight than you will be lifting for your sets, it should be one explosive rep. (This will make your first work set feel easier than ever! By triggering an incredibly strong signal to the brain, then making it recruit alot more muscle fibers than needed.)
6. For maximum strength, always drink plenty of water and make sure you rest at LEAST three minutes in between sets.
I also want to share some helpful tips about mass gaining with you:
1.Question: I want to gain a lot of muscle; can I do it without adding fat?
Answer: The answer to this is that it is very difficult to do. If you want a lot of muscle you have to be in a positive calorie and nitrogen (protein) balance for an extended period of time. This means taking in more calories and protein than your body needs to maintain its weight, and excess calories generally equals at least a moderate amount of fat increase. Optimizing your food intake by training and resting properly will help ensure that you are building as much mass as possible in the process.
2. Question: How can I predict my one-rep max without actually doing it?
Answer: For years, bodybuilders have been using one-rep max charts to predict what they will lift in competition. They do this because it's hard to keep performing one-rep max lifts due to the pressure it puts on your joints and the safety precautions you have to take, like having a good spotter. The most commonly accepted formula is known as the Brzycki formula.
3. Question: My workout partner is always on me to drink more water, but frankly I hate it! How important is it? Any tricks to help me drink more?
Answer: Water is extremely important. for good health and if you're into packing on the mass it becomes even more important. There are three major reasons why. First, when carbs are stored in your liver and muscles for energy, they are stored as glycogen. Glycogen is dependent on water, that’s why when athletes’ carbohydrate load they must drink significant water if they are to store the glycogen. Staying hydrated means your muscles will be full and ready to go every workout. Second, water helps regulate sodium and potassium which are located outside and inside a muscle cell. If water levels become too low, sodium and potassium become out of balance and hormones like aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone start competing, and the end result is a higher risk of muscle cramping!
4. Question: My friend said I should do some cardio even if I'm in a mass phase of training. What do you think about this?
Answer: Everyone should know that cardio is good, but not for gaining mass! It burns fat, but it burns calories, carbs and even protein as well. This will slow your mass gains down. There's an old saying about gaining mass that goes something like this: "Lay down when you can sit, sit when you can stand, stand when you can move around and drive when you can walk". Gaining mass quickly is about putting all of your energy into your muscle and the weights. Of course, if you're getting ready for a bodybuilding competitions, football seasons or strongman competitions, you will need to incorporate cardio (aerobic) activity into your plans.
5. Question: What is ATP?
Answer: ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate, which in its best sense supplies your body with energy. When glucose is broken down in the body, it supplies energy to ATP. ATP stores that energy until it is needed, at which time a phosphate group “springs off” to release energy and leave adenosine diphosphate. The "ATP's" reaction looks like this: ATP > ADP + Pi + Energy
6. Question: Can I shorten the 3-minute rest times in mass training?
Answer: Yes. But even though this will decrease your time in the gym, reducing rest times won’t allow your muscle’s energy system to completely recover before your next set. Sure, you’ll still get great results, but for the best possible results, follow the "three minute rest in between sets" rule.
Well, there you have it – 6 secrets to effective mass building workouts and some helpful tips about gaining mass! Try them and see how they affect your results.- my bet is that you will be pleased!

As Men Grow Older, Men Should Be Feeling Better
A short time ago, when a man turned sixty-five, he became officially old, retiring from work, and then having four or five years to spend as he wishes before illness set in. However, this is not the case anymore. It is becoming more and more evident that the older a man gets, the healthier he has been. By eating healthy, exercising, and quitting harmful habits, such as smoking, a man can add years to his life. Although it is better to start good clean living from early on, it is never too late for men to make changes and take better care of them selves. One of the main ways men can improve their health is by adding high quality nutritional supplements to their diet.
Although many men would like to begin taking nutritional supplements, most men feel that they are very confusing. Because there are hundreds and hundreds of nutritional supplements on health food store shelves, determining which supplements provide health benefits for a 50+ man can be extremely overwhelming. The best supplement to begin with is a good multivitamin that contains large amounts of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The only mineral a man should avoid is iron, which he should get enough of through the food he eats. Too much iron can cause health problems. When searching for a multivitamin, one that contains lycopene is very important. Lycopene decreases a man’s risk for heart disease, age-related macular degeneration, and prostate cancer. Other important components are antioxidant blends, ginseng for energy and stamina, and digestive enzymes to aid absorption.
Along with taking a quality multivitamin for general health, there are six other vital nutrients that can help prevent prostate cancer from developing and also help fight against disease. The first of these is calcium d-glucarate, which is found in fruits and vegetables. This nutrient helps men’s detoxification systems get rid of harmful excess hormones that increase the risk for prostate cancer. Selenium has very powerful effects on the prostate gland. A recent study by researchers concluded that selenium can cut the risk of prostate cancer by 63 percent. The third of these nutrients is green tea, which is the second most widely consumed liquid in the world, following water. Men in China and Japan who have been drinking it for centuries have very low rates of prostate cancer. Research has concluded that a plant substance in green tea called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) can stop the growth of prostate cancer right in its tracks. Maitake Mushrooms are linked to good health in those who eat them because they contain an important compound called D-fraction, which destroys 95% of human prostate cancer cells in lab experiments. The last of the vital nutrients is lycopene, whose preliminary reports demonstrate that it can actually kill prostate cancer cells.
Similar to women, who experience significant hormonal changes as they age, men experience something called andropause. Andropause in men occurs when testosterone production, the main sex hormone in men, begins to slowly decline. Although estrogen levels in women decline faster than testosterone levels in men, testosterone decline can cause a great deal of unpleasant symptoms including abdominal weight gain, hair loss, reduced energy and sex drive, heart disease, and prostate enlargement. Whether the man believes that these are changes due to andropause, or just consequences of aging, most men will experience some or all of them as they continue to age.
Unfortunately, there is no supplement that can give a man the hormone level of a twenty year old. However, there is a nutrient that can help the testosterone in an older man “behave” more like a younger man’s testosterone. A study by the Fred Hutchinson Center in Seattle concluded that men who ate three servings of cruciferous vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussels sprouts, each day have a 48 percent lower risk of prostate cancer. A chemical found in cruciferous plants, DIM, is responsible for this prostate cancer prevention because of its ability to metabolize estrogen. A precise ratio of testosterone to estrogen is needed for men to be able to maintain a healthy sexual response, effective sexual function, strong bones and muscles, viable sperm, and a well-functioning prostate gland. After many years of work, scientists have finally discovered a stable, all natural and absorbable form of DIM. When men take DIM, their estrogen metabolism improves, and testosterone metabolism accelerates, which results in higher testosterone levels similar to those seen in young men. This results in weight loss, reduction in prostate gland enlargement, and helping men 50+ feel stronger and leaner.
Saw palmetto, a small palm tree which is found in Florida and South Carolina, produces berries which contain many beneficial compounds. Supplements that contain saw palmetto are extremely effective in treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH), one of the most common health conditions in older men, with half of all men aged 40-60 and more than 90 percent of men over 80 having BPH. BPH is caused by the conversion of estrogen to a very potent form of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Once prostate cells are exposed to DHT, they multiply in number and get much larger. Rarely improving, BPH gradually gets worse over the years, causing the man to continually need to urinate, interrupted sleep, dribbling, and loss of urine, which significantly interferes with a man’s quality of life. Prescription medications that have been developed to treat BPH are only partially effective. However, saw palmetto berry extract relives the symptoms of BPH by furthering the production of DHT.
Because sexual intimacy is an important, complex, and lifelong need, there are honest nutritional supplements for men’s sexual health. Sexual intimacy makes us feel better physically and mentally and adds to our sense of security, belonging, and self-esteem. Since many things can affect men’s ability to engage in sexual activity, such as erectile dysfunction (ED), the development of the prescription medication Viagra has revolutionized ED treatment. Like all medicines, Viagra can cause some side effects which include headache, flushing of the face and upset stomach. However, not every man can take Viagra. Those who use nitrate drugs, which controls chest pain and those with serious liver problems should not take Viagra. However, there is a nutritional supplement formulated with vitamins, herbs, and glandular products that targets male sexual organs. It contains vitamin E, liver fractions, wheat germ, beta-sitosterol, and herbal extracts of muira puama, Mexican damiana, saw palmetto, cola nut, ginseng, and ginkgo biloba. If the use of nutritional supplements for two months does not improve your erections, you do need to see a healthcare practitioner, as sexual problems can be a sign of serious health problems. Almost all practitioners understand how difficult this problem is for men to discuss and are experienced in getting the information as quickly and painlessly as possible. Great supplements like Beta Sitosterol and Saw Palmetto along with other supplements mentioned can be found at your local or internet health food store.
